Social work in England is a regulated profession. This means that to be able to practise as a social worker, individuals must be registered with Social Work England.

Using industry knowledge and Social Work England guidance, our guest speakers Philippa Geddes and Catherine Witt discussed what social workers are required to do to re-register with Social Worker England.

This webinar looked into what documentation and evidence social workers must provide to successfully re-register, both in terms of their qualified status and in terms of their continued professional development (CPD) plans.

Speaker profile:

Philippa Geddes, Regional Engagement Lead (South West), Social Work England

Philippa has lived and worked in Devon for the majority of her social work career, although she began her career working as a newly qualified social worker for Birmingham City Council. She is passionate about social work and has over 20 years’ experience of working in statutory children and family social work.

Philippa graduated from Warwick University with a MA/Diploma in Social Work in 1999. She has worked as a children and family social worker, independent reviewing officer and child protection chair, LSCB board manager, and was a team manager within a local authority children and family team before joining Social Work England in August 2019.

Catherine Witt, Regional Engagement Lead (North East), Social Work England

Catherine was formally the principal social worker in Sunderland working primarily with Together for Children with a role in adult services. As principal social worker for five years, she was able to promote the profession and directly support front line social workers.

She began her career in Leeds in the 1980's, having moved from Northern Ireland to study a science degree, but it was the running of the Student Community Action group which set her on the path to social work. She has since worked as a social worker in statutory services (mostly) including probation, youth justice, children’s services and residential care.
